I LOVE these Ouseburn Open Studios events. They give me the chance to pretend that I’m shopping for unusual and one-off Christmas presents while, in actuality, snaffling a whole load of fabulous stuff for myself. And I will be making Mushroom Works my first port of call this year as the studios and gallery have now completed work on five brand new studios on their second floor, which will offer visitors even more opportunities to look at the increasing numbers of talented artists and designers in the region.
During the weekend you will be able to peruse, purchase and commission unique and beautiful pieces from a wide selection of artwork including paintings, illustration, jewellery, ceramics, furniture and textiles. Mushroom Works will also, once again, be showcasing their ever-popular 20cm x 20cm artworks by north-east artists priced at, yep, 20 quid. And as well as the artists in their studios, a makers market will pop-up in one of the ground floor galleries where some of the creative friends of the studios will be selling a range of affordable products. And, in the lead up to this year’s event, Mushroom Works will be running a Treasure Hunt offering the public an opportunity to win a 20cm x 20cm of their choice. Golden ‘tools of the trade’ will be hung in various creative and cultural locations across Newcastle waiting to be found (check out their social media pages for more info – and clues – on this lovely wheeze). Naturally, their café will also be open throughout the event serving up festive vibes (and, hey, food and drink too).
Mushroom Works are just one of the venues throwing up their doors this year, so make sure you leave time in your schedule to visit: The Biscuit Factory, Kiln, 36 Lime Street, Northern Print, Biscuit Tin Studios and B.Box Studios.
