samlingclass199.jpg Masterclass! Samling style!

The Samling Institute for Young Artists are giving you the chance to look behind the scenes and watch an actor, opera singer and pianist working with six young classical singers and two pianists.

Get this for a line-up: Anne Schwanewilms (with a glittering international career this German soprano specialises in Romantic song and opera repertoire); James Baillieu (one of Britain’s leading song pianists); and James Garnon (this Shakespearean actor regularly plays leads at The Globe Theatre). The trio are all part of this masterclass which has a simple format: each singer chooses a piece to work on and is assigned a leader and a pianist. They’ll perform for the audience, and the leader will then spend twenty minutes developing and refining that performance through discussion and technical advice, giving the audience a fascinating insight into the performing process. The masterclass comes at the end of a residential week of intensive coaching and one regular audience member, and now Chair of Samling Friends, Doreen Middlemast, sums up the unique appeal of such sessions: “Musical performance is about putting across a message and telling a story. By watching others involved in this process we are witnessing an inspiring and life-affirming experience.”
