sweet19.jpg The Sweet! I’m going there!

There’s a big part of me that wants to say that The Sweet are the best band of all time. They’re playing Stockton in November (and Newcastle in December).

Consider the evidence. Their run of singles from 1972 to 1975 includes: Poppa Joe, Little Willy, Wig-Wam Bam, Block Buster, Hell Raiser, The Ballroom Blitz, Teenage Rampage, The Six Teens and Fox on the Run. Add to that 1978’s Love Is Like Oxygen and you’re talking about some of the best British singles of all time (OF ALL TIME!). Fans? They had a few including Gene Simmons (“Without The Sweet there would not have been Kiss”), Mötley Crue’s Nikki Sixx (“We wanted to be The Sweet”) and Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot (“This is the band I wish I had been in”). And, yes, I’m not sure how many of this year’s line-up were in the original band, but, hey, do you know what, I’m not even going to look. I can almost feel Christmas breathing down my neck and I’m in the mood for letting my motherfucking hair down. Join me, won’t you?

The Sweet: Saturday 30 November, ARC, Stockton; Thursday 12 December, Sage 2, Sage Gateshead. Both 8pm, £28. arconline.co.uk; sagegateshead.com
