Our Crack Little Crack

handmaidz.jpg The Testaments

I’ve just finished reading ‘The Testaments’, Margaret Atwood’s follow-up to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. As you might expect it’s suitably great but it did make me wonder all over again about those red cloaks and white bonnets that the Handmaid’s wear. I know that they’re supposed to be a symbol of oppression and conformity but – whisper it! – I really want one. I think they look great! I’d love to swish down to the shops in it and pick up my morning paper and scratch card. “Usual is it? The Bangers ‘n’ Cash Multiplier?” “Yes indeed. Praise be.” Of course, many women all over the world have taken to wearing the costume – to show how much they’re not on board with the continuing denigration of women’s rights – but I wonder if a part of them, just a very, very small part mind you, really loves just dressing up. And it’s certainly a lot cooler to stick one of these on than to wave around some crappy old placard.
