The classic Hitchcock film ‘The Lady Vanishes’ has been adapted for the stage by The Thriller Theatre Company in extraordinary fashion. It’s coming to the Darlington Hippodrome in October.

To my mind ‘The Lady Vanishes’ is right up with ‘The 39 Steps’ when it comes to the greatest Hitchcock films, not just of his British period, but from his complete oeuvre. The plot runs like clockwork and sees Iris travelling home from continental Europe in order to get married. She bangs her head when climbing on board the train and is helped by the kindly Miss Froy. When the journey gets underway, she finds that Miss Froy has promptly disappeared and none of the other passengers recall having seen her. What’s a spunky young socialite to do in such circumstances? Enlist the help of a handsome musician and investigate the mystery for herself, of course. There are thrills, spills and laughs too in an ingenious production that captures the essence of the film.

The Lady Vanishes, Tuesday 15-Saturday 19 October, Darlington Hippodrome, 7.30pm (mats Wed & Thurs 2pm and Sat 2.30pm), from £14.50. darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk
