First up: Bolton Castle is not in Bolton. It’s in North Yorkshire. It was once a defensive fortress and despite being partially ‘slighted’ by Cromwell’s men during the Civil War siege, it has been preserved in an outstanding condition with many interesting rooms and features to discover including the Great Chamber, Mary Queen of Scots’ bedroom and Dungeon (Brr…). And, for five nights in October, the castle will play host to a series of medieval themed evenings where hardy punters will be able to find out all about the ghosts that reside therein. The nights will also include a two-course medieval themed banquet of curry, fruit pie and, of course, mulled wine. There are plenty of Halloween events happening across the north-east this year but do any of them have the all important atmosphere that Bolton Castle carries? (Answer: no.)
