marthahill199.jpg There’s gold in that Hill

And that Hill in full: Martha Hill, who is one of the finest singer/songwriters currently lighting up the north-east. She’s got a new EP out and a tour.

Oh, wow! Martha Hill’s latest seven-track EP ‘Be Still’ is quite something. Her leftfield art-pop is pure balm for my soul and she imbues her songs with all manner of interesting bits of instrumentation and zig-zagging melodies that don’t half keep you on your toes. The title track alone manages to be intimate, ponderous, soaring and anthemic – all within the space of four minutes. The EP also features ‘Pick Me Up’ (think: folky R&B), which was produced by Joe Rubel, who has worked with Ed Sheeran and Rag’n’Bone man. In short, she’s got it going on and you can see her in full flow when she’s plays the Head of Steam in Newcastle and the Twisterella Festival this October. Jump to it.

Martha Hill’s ‘Be Still’ EP is released on 27 September. Martha Hill, Saturday 19 October, Head of Steam, Neville Street, Newcastle, 7.30pm, £9. seetickets.com
