sidecivil Downfall of a caliphate

Photographer Ivor Prickett covered the fight against ISIS forces and his extraordinary work can be seen at Side Gallery.

Ivor Prickett worked exclusively for the New York Times between 2016 and 2018. He was often embedded with Iraqi and Syrian Kurdish forces as he documented both the fighting and its heavy toll on the civilian population and urban landscape. He was also there at the fall of the city of Mosul, which was key to the downfall of the Islamic State. His startling imagery includes pictures of civilians (pictured) who remained in west Mosul during the battle to retake the city and can be seen here lining up for aid distribution. His work on these tours earned him first prize in the General News Stories category of the 2018 World Press Photo and he was named as a finalist in the Breaking News Photography category of the Pulitzer Prize.
