Marine artist extraordinaire Edwin Blackburn has his work in collections around the world and you can see why he’s so lauded when his latest exhibition comes to the Blagdon Gallery in Seaton Burn in Newcastle.

Edwin Blackburn was born in Northumberland and so, naturally, he gravitated towards some of the most beautifully coastline in the country for his subject matter. But during the late 1990s he extended his local and British interest to include American maritime history, East coast whaling ships and West coast lumber schooners (this led on to Blackburn’s work being sold via Christie’s Maritime Auction House in New York). Whether it is picturesque or industrial imagery his work displays a real understanding of the genre and takes in rivers, harbours and estuaries, or the sea and coastline with the vessels that inhabit them. Equally happy painting present day subject matter, or the historic days of sail, his paintings display a rare technical skill and attention to detail.
