handsoffgretel19.jpg What are these gonks after?

They are after your love and they’ll get it too if you like your pop music to sound like it’s been fed through a grunge-me-up filter. They’re playing Newcastle in July.

One of my favourite things of the year – aside from sundry fascists getting plastered in milkshake – is the second album from UK band Hands Off Gretel. Released in March on the, what else, Puke Pop label, ‘I Want The World’ is one of those real gobful of nitrous oxide type releases. The South Yorkshire band have the estimable Lauren Tate on vocals and she belts it out like Gwen Stefani with a firecracker jammed up her bum. It’s real pell-mell stuff with the band keeping up a full-on sonic assault, which, nevertheless is packing real melodic intent among all the fiery riffs. It’s only their second album but it received the kind of reviews from the likes of Kerrang!, Louder Than War and Classic Rock Magazine that would make their mothers blush. Expect this one to go off big-time.
