hancockmiller19.jpg It’s Millar time

Newcastle’s latest exhibition space, Hancock Gallery, has opened with a wide-ranging retrospective of Alexander Millar’s work.

Every time a new gallery opens in the north-east an angel gets its wings and there’s sure to be one celestial being very happy because of the Hancock Gallery’s recent grand launch. The gallery itself is a real looker and situated in a restored four-storey Georgian building, which is a mere five-minute walk from the Haymarket and Jesmond metro stations. And for their inaugural show they’re celebrating one of the UK’s favourite contemporary artists, Alexander Millar. His work will be familiar to most in the region because his “Gadgie” figures have become part of the cultural landscape over the last few years. Unashamedly nostalgic his pieces have found homes for themselves in galleries and private collections around the world. This retrospective is being held over three floors and features prints, paintings and sculptures from the artist’s private collection.
