Radio and TV regular Angela Barnes is a prodigious joke-writer with a reputation for sharp material delivered in a world-weary style, but for her latest show she’s  trying to look on the bright side of life.

“In the Brownies they’ve now got a self-esteem badge. How shit are you going to feel if you don’t get it?’ That was Angela Barnes telling it like it is the last time I saw her. She is one of the most down to earth stand-ups working today who has a knack of cutting through all the bullshit to get to the nub of why the world around us is so ridiculous. She’s a regular on TV shows such as ‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘Insert Name Here’ and last year she completed another sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, which won a whole raft of rave reviews (“A sure-fire bet the instant she utters her opening lines” – The Scotsman). Her latest show sees her trying, really trying, to look on the bright side of life. Given her previous world-view, I can’t wait to see just how she’s going to manage that…

Angela Barnes: Rose-Tinted, Sunday 16 June, The Stand Comedy Club, Bar & Kitchen, Newcastle, doors 7pm (show 8.30pm), £14/£12. thestand.co.uk
