monkib19.jpg Coming to the boil this summer

Boiler suits are having a bit of a moment and Monki have produced a series of loose, short-sleeved versions that are ideal for those hot summer months.

“Everyone stops to admire the scene, Rosie’s at work on the P-19, she’s never twittery, nervous or jittery – I’m Rosie, hm-hm-hm-hmm, the riveter…” Yep – whenever I feel under assault from the patriarchy, I like to dig out my copy of ‘Rosie the Riveter’, the 1942 song produced to celebrate the deeds of the World War II cultural icon. And when I’m belting it out there’s nothing I enjoy more than slipping into something a little more comfortable, something a little more utilitarian, like a boiler suit. Rosie is perhaps the most famous boiler-suit wearer ever, but there are plenty of women following her lead into the 21stcentury with this humble garment once again being thrust back into the spotlight. Monki’s denim take on it comes in all manner of shades (rusty red, beige, white, black and midnight blue) and come complete with cooling wide legs and short sleeves. And, yes, they can be a bit of a pain to negotiate when you’re in desperate need of a wee, but when you’re rushing to the loo feeling twittery, nervous and jittery, just imagine how damn swish you’ll look.
