whatif19.jpg When WORTHY & AMAZING collide

The ‘What If?’ album features a clutch of top-notch local artists and is raising funds for RTProjects who work creatively with those who experience depression and anxiety. They’re having a launch gig in Durham on 1 June.

To the best of my knowledge Martin Stephenson (pictured) has never played a bad gig. I’ve seen him countless times since his days with the Daintees and each time the bonhomie just flows from him. He remains one of the region’s favourite sons and it’s great news he’s getting behind this project which came about when RTProjects asked Durham based live music promoter DownByTheRiver to pull together the north-east musical community to contribute songs to the compilation ‘What if?’ album. And many of those acts are playing this launch gig which will be headlined by Stephenson. Also on the bill are The Violet Chimes (featuring the poppy duo of Jamie Harwood and John Farrer), Anne-Marie Sanderson (indie-folk from this Cumbrian lass), Ian Bartholomew (a member of Teesside folkies Peg Powler), Lee Maddison (the singer/songwriter weaving his own kind of magic), Steve Pledger (Americana that is poetic, knowing and melodic) and Beano (RTProjects manager and fine musician in his own right). Gonna be great.

What if? album launch: Martin Stephenson + support, Saturday 1 June, The Vane Tempest Room, Dunelm House, New Elvet, Durham City, 6.45pm, £20. rtprojects.org.uk; linktr.ee/downbytheriver9
