On the Basis of Sex
Stars: Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Cailee Spaeny, Justin Theroux
This rote and drearily dutiful biopic focuses on the formative years of liberal hero and Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, from her enrolment as a young Jewish woman to the elite but stuffy and sexist Harvard Law School in the late 50s, to her role as a lawyer in a 1970 ground-breaking sex discrimination case. A miscast and boringly prim Felicity Jones is Ginsburg; Armie Hammer is Martin, her stay-at-home, blandly supportive, husband. The direction is pedestrian while the script suffers from a bad case of the Sorkins, with dialogue consisting chiefly of speechifying or supporting characters praising Ruth, assuring her of her place in history. This hagiographic approach actually diminishes Ginsburg as a relatable character. RBG deserves better.
