This is The Voluntears (well, one of them – you won’t believe the trouble we have trying to get decent pics out of bands). But what they lack in good band shots they more than make up for with rollicking tunes.

Since forming a few years back there have been plenty of people working themselves up into a real lather over north-east five-piece The Voluntears (yep – that’s how they’re spelling it). Dame Lauren Laverne of BBC6 Music frothed: “I’ve found the next big band” while Cast’s John Power opined, “I’ll remember this for a long time – cool band”. (Even Jermaine Jackson, of The Jacksons, weighed in with: “We are glad we witnessed it!”) What Jermaine had undoubtedly witnessed was a band who know how to knock it out of the park when it comes to penning songs that really take flight with rousing, arena-filling choruses tumbling forth and being belted right back at them by an ever growing army of fans. And I’m sure John Power loved how they can give their melodies just enough of a twist to keep them always fresh and invigorating. They’ve had plenty of airplay from the likes of BBC Tees, BBC Newcastle and Spark Radio but it’s playing live where they really shine. (Handily enough they’re playing the O2 Academy in Newcastle on 26 January. Get to it!)
