Are you up to speed with LA’s Warm Drag yet? They released one of the more startling albums of 2018 and they’ll be rolling out the big guns when they play The Cluny in January.

When there are only two of you in your band you both better be hot and, thankfully, Vashti Windish (vocals) and Paul Quattrone (everything else) are Ginster’s-pastie-in-a-microwave-for-10-minutes hot. Their self-titled debut album, released in August 2018, saw them uproot the fuzzy sounds of the West Coast by taking a full-on maximalist approach. “I basically wanna make Bomb Squad versions of rock ‘n’ roll songs,” says Quattrone citing the legendary hip-hop production team as a key influence. The result is a clutch of knockout tunes that take everything from dub to electronica, and, yes, rock ‘n’ roll, and feeds them through significant amounts of psych filters. They sound like Suicide on fizzbombs and wah wah guitars. Quattrone certainly knows his way around a beat-laden song, as he’s the longstanding drummer with !!!, but Windish is a real revelation channelling everyone from Nico to Patti to Siouxsie. If you’re looking for someone to stick a metaphorical firework up your bum this January then this pair are more than up to the task.
