rusbyangel18.jpg Hey! A Christmas angel!

And that angel in full: Kate Rusby, who is bringing her special yuletide show to Sage Gateshead in December.

For the last 15 years or so Yorkshire lass Kate Rusby’s Christmas shows have been as much a part of the festive season as reindeer jumpers and the ‘Pointless’ Christmas special. In that time she has played some of the UK’s most prestigious venues and, yes, those prestigious venues invariably include our very own Sage Gateshead. She will be joined on the banks of the Tyne by a merry band of musicians (including a fabulous brass quintet) to regale us with a mix of traditional carols and Christmas songs. She’s following in a tradition started over 200 years ago when the good folk of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire would flock to their local public houses to sing their own, unique variations of familiar carols. Rusby commented that this bunch, “were kicked out of churches during the Victorian era for being too happy.” There’s no chance of anyone being booted out of the Sage for being too happy, although we can’t guarantee that you won’t be utterly overcome with joy.
