Are Shamu the finest three-piece alt-pop band in Newcastle? Does Eamonn Holmes enjoy a two-for-one offer in Greggs?

Hey! Let’s see how Shamu describe themselves via the wonders of a press release: “The band explores the space between electronic and organic; combining acoustic drums and synth bass with sampled guitars and emotive vocals to create a sound that has been compared to the likes of Wild Beasts, Tame Impala and Everything Everything.” I’m not arguing with any of that lot, because everything I’ve heard from Shamu thus far has come direct from that sweet spot that combines glorious pop hooks with just enough experimentation and exploration to keep your interest levels pegged at: High. Case in point is their superb new single Eyes Are Wide, which has an expansive 1980s feel, like Erasure gone prog; or maybe – flashing forward into the 1990s – Mansun gone good. The band have made numerous appearances on BBC Introducing, managed to wow Evolution Emerging last year, and have already racked up thousands of Spotify plays. Next up? Their debut EP, which is due for release later this year. Me? I can’t wait.
