theyadas17.jpg Local: The Yada Yada Yadas

Durham-based The Yada Yada Yadas are certainly in the pink, and their just released debut single, Oceans, is certainly worth getting excited about.

If every local band that claimed to be influenced by Pavement gave me an apple then I could make an awful lot of scrumpy. The Yada Yada Yadas are yet another bunch to swear allegiance, and, yes, they do seem rather in thrall to that 1990s college radio sound with their fleecy, fuzzed-up guitars and melodic ways and means. Case in point is their super debut single Oceans, which is out now on Silent Kid Records. Built around the sturdiest of melodies, it features some nicely squally guitar work that bends pleasingly all over the shop into a glorious melange of sound that should be a fixture on 6Music (the lead singer really knows how to hit his straps, too). The band’s name has another US influence in that it was culled from one of Seinfeld’s most famous episodes; and, apparently, they reference the much loved, but much dead, US comedian Bill Hicks in their lyrics too. I imagine their sound will go down a storm in the US also, but in the meantime, let’s get excited about one of our own before they make any attempts to cross the Atlantic.
