Orla Kiely originally found a modicum of fame by being a hat designer. She received a Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art for a hat collection (which was subsequently snapped up by Harrods) but when attending London Fashion Week with her father he sagely noted that while everyone was carrying a handbag “no one was wearing a goddamn hat”. (I’m paraphrasing. The gentleman wasn’t an American.) Kiely thought to herself: “He’s right you know! I’m getting out of stupid hats and into fucking handbags!” (Again, I’m putting words into her head.) Anyway, the rest is history with Kiely handbags now being seen on the most fashionable arms around. Except, this ongoing history now also includes her clothing range which is really starting to turn heads. Her Autumn/Winter collection contains some absolute beauties (including some fine cardigans) but it’s these coats that do it for me. Not cheap – over 400 quid – but they’re the kind of coats that will resist both the cold, and the vagaries of being on-trend, year after year. DP
