This is James Leonard Hewitson. He’s the one on the right etc. (Pic: Nick Wesson)

We featured James Leonard Hewitson on these very pages a couple of years back, when he was in the very excellent Hartlepool band Arcs & Trauma, but now he’s striking out on his own for what looks set to be a very excellent solo career. (FYI: He’s also tootled a trumpet for Frankie & the Heartstrings and Kingsley Chapman & the Murder so he knows his way round a good tune.) The 22-year-old’s first single, Care Less, Love Less, is a gentle call to arms for us to let go of all the excessive baggage that clutter up our heads (“Just because you care less, doesn’t mean that you are careless”) and comes with the kind of sunshine soaked, sing-a-long vibe, that is utterly captivating. Lovely stuff. He was something of a wow at this year’s Evolution Emerging Festival and has more north-east dates this month including: Sound It Out, Stockton (4pm), 9 July; BBC Tees, Bob Fischer, 9 July; The Studio, Hartlepool (with Fling + Shamu), 22 July; Pop Recs Ltd, Sunderland (1pm), 23 July; The Head of Steam, Newcastle (with Shamu + tbc), 23 July; Soapbox Sessions, Darlington, 7 August.
