A Knight to remember
Beverley Knight is hitting the road this summer with her much-anticipated ‘Born to Perform’ tour, and it promises to be a real victory lap for a woman who has done it all. She first emerged in the mid-90s with a sophisticated, gospel-drenched alternative to Britpop and today she’s often cited as the vital link between 80s soul pioneers (like Soul II Soul) and the modern era of UK talent (like Adele or Joss Stone). And I think it's safe to say that she paved the way for British R&B to be taken seriously on a global stage. Today she still possesses that staggering three-to-four octave range, shifting from delicate tunes to roof-lifting bangers with ease, and her prowess will be in full effect on this tour which is designed to bridge her two careers. Yes, you’ll get chart hits such as ‘Shoulda Woulda Coulda’ and ‘Come As You Are’, but you’ll also get powerhouse showtunes that defined her West End success. Gonna be some Knight. JL
