Homecoming and Happy

Originally from Newcastle, but now based around the Brighton area, Demob Happy are back in Toon this December for a headline show at The Grove in Byker that promises to be all kinds of raucous.

Demob Happy have a real touch of the louche swirling around them. I mean, just take a look at that pic. And that loucheness certainly carries over to their music. The band exude a certain – can I say scuzziness? They’re grungy, but they also know how to pen a rollicking pop song. And they marry these two things in a kind of low-slung manner that I find utterly irresistible. Chuck in a gum-snapping attitude and those rather glorious trousers they wear, and you’ve got the complete package. The three-piece – give a shout out to Matthew Marcantonio (bass, lead vocals), Adam Godfrey (guitar, vocals) and Tom Armstrong (drums, vocals) – have won over the likes of Jack White who has had them on support duties (he even played with them on stage at an Edinburgh gig). It promises to be something of a real celebration when they visit the north-east once again, so be sure to pack your warmest of welcomes. Oh – and make sure you dig out your best trousers, too. DP

Demob Happy + support, Saturday 14 December, The Grove, Newcastle, 7pm, £15, thegrovenewcastle.co.uk
