Gibside 18th Century Landscape Garden

For a perfect place to escape from the city try Gibside a relaxed and beautiful 18th century landscape park and woodland only three miles from the MetroCentre, and a regular bus destination from Newcastle (Go NorthEast 45, 46, 47). It’s also one of the National Trust’s finest north-east attractions. For the outdoorsy among you, there are three football pitches, a skateboard park and canoeing facilities on hand.

There is a small charge to obtain a worthwhile guide that will help you explore the arboretum, which contains some rare tree varieties as well as the National Collection of Whitebeams. Look out for the nearby Houghall Discovery Trail, a two-mile wooded track through the countryside.
