The Heugh Gun Battery Museum

Visitors to Hartlepool are always surprised and entranced by the ancient headland, home to Hartlepool’s Heugh Battery museum, Situated on the seafront overlooking the North sea the Battery affords a commanding position which explains why it has been fortified for over two hundred years. Nationally famous as the only Battery in England to fire its guns in anger during the First World War against Battle cruisers of the German High Seas Fleet, and where the death of the first British soldier to be killed in action during that war occurred, the restored Battery is now home to an extensive collection of artillery and also houses a growing collection of memorabilia relating to the country at war.
