Detail

A major new exhibition introducing and exploring the fascinating history and stunning art of China. Costume and embroidery from the Emperor's court alongside pottery, jade and artefacts from the Shang to Qing dynasties and beyond will bring the splendour of Imperial China to Carlisle. International loans will be shown outside of China for the first time, supplemented by objects on loan from UK organisations and Tullie House's own Chinese collection. Discover the role of warriors and scholars in the Emperor's court, explore the rich symbolism of Chinese art and learn about the ancient Silk Road that linked China to the West for thousands of years, bringing Chinese goods to Carlisle and taking ideas and tastes from Britain back to the producing centres of China.
