rachelsage19.jpg Gig of the month alert!

The US singer-songwriter Rachael Sage is a rare talent and she’s coming to The Exchange in North Shields this July.

I have no hesitation in cranking up the Gig of the Month klaxon when Rachael Sage comes to town because this is a woman who really knows how to put on a show. She’s a superb songwriter and over 14 albums her intoxicating blend of pop, folk and rock has seen her compared to the likes of Tori Amos, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow and Regina Spektor. (It’s not just other female performers that she has been likened to with the famed pop producer Phil Ramone commenting that working with Sage reminded him of collaborating with Bob Dylan: “She has a very unusual way of treating a pop song.”) Last year’s ‘Myopia’ album was hailed as one of her best with songs that took listeners on an emotional journey but one with optimism at its core. She is a real raconteur too, always ensuring that each show she plays is a real event, so when I implore you to check out Sage this month, I don’t mean the one in Gateshead.

Rachael Sage + Carrington MacDuffle and Lion O. King, Wednesday 10 July, The Exchange, Howard Street, North Shields, 7.30pm, £8.50. ticketsource.co.uk/theexchange
