Hartlepool’s James Leonard Hewitson is – as the above headline hints at – one of the region’s finest singer/songwriters and he’s back with a new single AND tour.

And that new single in full: ‘Deader’, which, despite having a title like ‘Deader’, and featuring lyrics such as, “I’ve applied for several jobs below my means, and I feel like my life is a low budget indie movie”, is actually as an exuberant a slice of indie-guitar-pop as you’ll hear all year. It sounds like MaxïmoPark after necking a load of fizz-bombs, which is something I can really get behind. James Leonard Hewitson first hovered onto our radar with his band Arcs & Trauma back in 2015, but since they fell by the wayside he has done good things with Kingsley Chapman & The Murder and Frankie & The Heartstrings. He started banging out his excellent solo stuff in 2016 and has now acquired a publishing deal so we can expect plenty more good stuff coming our way later this year. In the meantime he’s on tour so fill yer rootin’ tootin’ boots.

James Leonard Hewitson: Friday 12 July, Pop Recs, Sunderland; Saturday 13 July, Voodoo Café, Darlington; Sunday 14 July, Bobik’s, Newcastle (supporting The Stroppies); Friday 19 July, The Georgian Theatre, Stockton; Saturday 3 August, Gosforth Beer Festival, Newcastle. jamesleonardhewitson.com
