gilbert19.jpg Fancy a G&S? Have a double!

The Tynemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Society are spoiling us in June with a double bill of ‘Trial by Jury’ and ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’.

Lordy! What a treat this is going to be. ‘Trial by Jury’ has been described by noted theatre scholar Kurt Gänzl as “the most successful British one-act operetta of all time”. It concerns a “breach of promise of marriage” lawsuit in which Gilbert & Sullivan poke fun at the legal system in a plot that really ladles on the ludicrous. The two-act ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ meanwhile is one of the pair’s most beloved works and their first international sensation. Laughs are had at the expense of patriotism, party politics, the navy and the rise of unqualified people in positions of authority in a story in which the captain’s daughter – as captain’s daughters are wont to do – falls in love with a sailor from the lower-classes. This Tynemouth troupe never disappoint and it looks like they’re going to have another huge hit on their hands this summer.

Trial by Jury + H.M.S. Pinafore, Wednesday 19-Saturday 22 June, Tynemouth Priory Theatre, 7.15pm (5.15pm on Saturday), £14. ticketsource.co.uk/tynemouthgilbertandsullivan
