thousandfaces19.jpg Raising awareness of acid violence

The award-winning Amina Khayyam Dance Company are bringing the very powerful ‘A Thousand Faces’ to Northern Stage this May.

Acid attacks against women are a worldwide phenomenon and not restricted to any race, religion or region. Cases of attacks have been reported in the UK as well as across South-East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the West Indies and the Middle East. With little or no access to reconstructive surgery survivors are physically and emotionally scarred. In Pakistan, many reported assailants, typically a husband or someone else close to the victim, receive minimal to no punishment from the state. ‘A Thousand Faces’ subverts imagery of Bollywood beauty and Hollywood glamour in an incredible piece of bold dance-theatre that features Amina Khayyam collaborating European mime movements with Kathak’s intricate and detailed theatrical gestures of abhinaya(technique of communication).

A Thousand Faces, Friday 17 May, Northern Stage, Newcastle, 7.45pm, from £10. northernstage.co.uk
