London’s Girli has already issued a clutch of electro-pop classics that have set our collective “Ooh! Hello!” antennas a-twitching, but she’s about to send them really haywire with the release of her debut album in April.

“Stop telling me to grow some balls, I’m happy as a woman.” That’s Girli on feminist anthem ‘Hot Mess’ a song which comes over like a glorious melange of Lady Sovereign and Charli XCX reworking Squeeze’s ‘Up The Junction’. And it’s just one of the fruity tracks that has propelled Girli right up our Ones To Watch league. Elsewhere we’ve fallen in love with break-up banger ‘Day Month Second’ (paper-cut sharp lyrics + 1990s club grooves = I’m so over you) and this year’s ‘Deal With It’, which comes over like AlunaGeorge gorging themselves on fizz-bombs. And any song called ‘Fuck Right Back Off to L.A.’ is always going to win our vote, whether it’s any good or not (FYI: it’s also great). A real blur of DIY electro-sugar-pop, gum-snapping cool and every shade of hot-pink, Girli’s stock is high, but it’s set to go through the roof with the release of her ‘Odd One Out’ album on 5 April. (And, oh, we should also tell you that she’s playing Newcastle in April, too.)

Girli, Tuesday 23 April, Think Tank? Times Square, Newcastle, 7.30pm, £9. seetickets.com
