Judy! Judy! Judy!
I’m not usually someone given over to hyperbole put Judy Collins’ version of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides, Now’ is the BEST GODDAMN FOLK SONG OF ALL TIME. The lead single from her 1967 ‘Wildflowers’ album it’s just perfect: the soaring arrangement, Mitchell’s words (“Rows and flows of angel hair, and ice cream castles in the air, and feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way”) and Collins’ voice which is as pure and individual as a snowflake. The single has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame but she scored an even bigger commercial success with her recording of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Send in the Clowns’. Her imaginative interpretations of other people’s songs always hit you ‘right there’, but she’s also a highly successful songwriter in her own right and received a Grammy nomination in 2017 for her ‘Silver Skies Blue’ album which also garnered great critical acclaim. It would be nice to kick off 2019 by saying that you’ve seen a true legend, would it not? Don’t pass it up.
