The heavily inked Californian duo This Wild Life released one of the sunniest acoustic albums last year with the glorious ‘Petaluma’ and I’m sure they’ll be playing songs from it when they visit Newcastle in January.

If you’re looking for a burst of aural sunshine during these damned dark January days then I simply must point you in the direction of This Wild Life. The pair, from Long Beach in California, were more abrasive when they first kicked off, with a pop-punk clatter of a sound, but with the release of 2018’s ‘Petaluma’ they turned up the radio-friendly vibes and struck gold. They’re still not adverse to tackling heartfelt lyrical concerns, though – and don’t mind exploring the darker side of life – but they’ve done so through infectious melodies and a real mellow vibe. They’ve always been incredibly strong vocally, too, and that is even more evident on this album in which the voices are really given room to breathe. And there’s a real rawness about these songs, which I’m sure are going to sound incredible live. It should be a great gig in Newcastle as they’re being supported by William Ryan Key, best known as the former lead singer with pop/punkers Yellowcard.

This Wild Life + William Ryan Key, Wednesday 30 January, Think Tank? Times Square, Newcastle, 7.30pm, £14. ents24.com
