maddyprior18.jpg Go Maddy this Christmas

If you’re in the mood for some yuletide capering then Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band are sure to put you in the mood at Sage Gateshead this December.

If you’re thinking, “Maddy Prior… Maddy Prior… How do I know that name?” then you’re obviously not a fan of one of the UK’s best-loved folk bands, Steeleye Span. She is lead singer with the band and has one of those clear as a bell voices that sounds utterly exultant. It’s a celebratory voice and perfectly suited to her recent work with The Carnival Band. This outfit came about to focus on popular music from the 16thand 17thcenturies, with particular regard given to the informal and humorous presentations of those merry bands, and in recent years they have mixed renaissance, modern and ethnic instruments in their usual cavalier manner to tackle a range of familiar, and not-so-familiar, festive fare. Their giddy enthusiasm turns any show into a real party and with Maddy Prior offering the enchantment, it’s a combination that is sure to warm your innards even more than something mulled and alcoholic.
