The redoubtable SOUL’ed OUT Events are bringing a couple of legends to the Normanby Hotel this December in the shape of Alexander O’Neal and house music mover and groover Lenny Fontana.

Oh man! This Alexander O’Neal gig is going to be all kinds of special. The US superstar is responsible for my very favourite soul record of the 1980s, ‘Criticize’, which is one of those tunes that it’s literally impossible to hear enough of. He also flashlit the charts with tracks such as ‘If You Were Here Tonight’, ‘Fake’, ‘Never Knew Love Like This’ and ‘The Lovers’ which were all great vehicles for his full-bodied voice which has, with good reason, been compared to that of Otis Redding’s.

And this won’t be a typical gig as it’s going to be an up close and personal affair in the Signature Lounge of the Normanby Hotel. Oh my! And later in the month the hotel will really come alive when the Legends of House set up shop, which will see Lenny Fontana (pictured) fly in from New York City for an exclusive, one-off event. This legendary DJ wowed clubs such as Studio 54 and Better Days and also hit the charts with classic house anthems such as ‘Chocolate Sensation’. He remains in huge demand around the world and it’s a real coup for SOUL’ed OUT to bring him to the region. Our advice: see both.

Alexander O’Neal, Thursday 6 December, 7pm, £25; Legends of House: Lenny Fontana, Saturday 22 December, 8pm-2am, £10. Both at The Normanby Hotel, Middlesbrough. skiddle.com
