The Devil in Times Square
As the nights have drawn inexorably in I’ve found myself reaching for Amigo the Devil’s ‘Everything is Fine’ album more and more. His debut long-player was released earlier this year and it’s a real dark delight. It skips around the campfires that demark the outer edges of folk, Americana and metal to present us with a real bats in the belfry kind of a release, like Nick Cave fronting up The Handsome Family. It’s southern gothic made even more southern, even more gothic. And he injects a certain amount of doomy romance into his songs, too, which rubs alongside the good dollop of humour he brings to live shows (which is the spoonful of sugar you need when he’s picking his way through some pretty grim subject matters). And the collection of songs on the album are simply crying out to be heard in an intimate setting and Think Tank? in Newcastle certainly provides that. Time to make a pact with this Devil.
