The Cullercoats-based theatre company Cloud Nine are celebrating their 20th anniversary in November with a big bash at The Exchange in North Shields and – guest what! – you’re all invited.

And it promises to be quite a night in North Shields with a reprise of two of Cloud Nine’s most beloved short plays: ‘Making Plans for Jessica’ by Kitty Fitzgerald (a poignant comedy set in a care home) and ‘The Battling Ettricks’ by Mary Pickin (a sharp piece of slapstick about an 18th century warring couple). There will also be live music from Newcastle’s superb Bugman; a potted comic history of the company from founder Peter Mortimer; and a sumptuous buffet from my favourite restaurant, Sky Apple Café. Cloud Nine are unique in doing only newly commissioned work from northern writers and since their first production, ‘The Trip’, a comic fantasy performed at the village Community Centre, they have created more than 70 large and small-scale productions and commissioned more that 30 writers in the process. Don’t miss what it sure to be a super occasion and help support one of the real gems of the north-east.

Cloud Nine at 20, Saturday 17 November, The Exchange, Howard Street, North Shields, 7pm, £20. attheexchange.info
