Legendary British bass, Sir John Tomlinson, is set to appear at music charity Samling’s latest public event for the first time as part of their prestigious international Artist Programme, leading a team of renowned experts in their fields, including opera, song, piano and choreography.

“It is a great honour for us to be welcoming Sir John Tomlinson to Samling this year,” said Samling’s founding artist and executive director Karon Wright. “His experience on the operatic stage is unparalleled and, with his extensive concert and song repertoire, we look forward to the insights he will give into all that makes a truly great artist.” Tomlinson will be joined on stage at Sage Gateshead by three masters of their craft: acclaimed singing teacher Patricia MacMahon, award-winning pianist Joseph Middleton and Royal Opera House choreographer Mandy Demetriou. Together they will lead eight of the most talented up and coming classical singers and pianists in the UK through a public masterclass where the young artists will perform and are critiqued and coached by the leaders, investigating the range of elements that make up a truly exceptional performance. A short concert will follow the public masterclass, when audiences can witness first-hand the rapid and often striking refinement of the artist’s performance.

Samling Masterclass, Saturday 1 December, Sage Two, Sage Gateshead, 1.30pm-4.30pm (short concert follows at 5.15pm), £16.50. Tickets from sagegateshead.com or 0191 443 4661.
