Newcastle’s always fabulous night when it comes to all things wordy is ‘Born Lippy’ and it’s returning in October with a very special night of performance poetry, hip-hop and comedy.

The next ‘Born Lippy’ should be filed under “Extra Special” as they’ve teamed up with Apples and Snakes, England’s leading organisation for promoting spoken word events. And this Avengers Assemble-type match up should prove a real doozy as they’re set to bring us the singular talents of Buddy Wakefield (pictured). The American, three-time world champion spoken word artist, is renowned for his raw and disarming performances, full of humour and heart, and he will be delivering an hour-long set. Also along for the ride will be Sarah Crutwell, Creative Events Organiser of Teesside spoken word night ‘Diverse’. Her work aims to address “the things we lower our voices to talk about” such as mental health, sex, loneliness, politics, sexism and a woman’s right to choose. We’ll also be treated to a set from MC Drop Dead Fred, the versatile, enigmatic and thought-provoking MC who raps about everything from anime cartoons to Private Finance Initiatives. Word up!

Born Lippy, Wednesday 17 October, Cobalt Studios, 10 Boyd Street, Newcastle, 7.30pm, £10 from wegottickets.com (or more on the door).
