It’s undoubtedly thrilling; it’s undoubtedly in Billingham; and it’s undoubtedly the Billingham International Folklore Festival of World Dance 2018.
Is there a more colourful, exuberant and just sheer damn fun fixture on the local calendar than this nine-day party? And fixture is right, because 2018 marks the 54thsuch event and, as ever, the organisers have thumbed deep into their contacts book to bring us the very best acts from Argentina to Egypt, Mexico to France (home to the outrageously talented La Capouliero Dance Company – pictured). This year’s theme is The Journey in Quest of Harmony, inspired by Ikebana, the famous Japanese art of flower arrangement and is aimed at engaging audiences and participants in reflecting what harmony means for each individual and how we can live in harmony in the modern world. Ikebana, the Journey in Quest of Harmony, is also the title of one of the festival highlights taking audiences on an artistic journey across two venues one of which will be the Forum Ice Arena where a cast of 300 international performers will take to the rink including world class ice skaters, dancers, actors, musicians and Taiko drummers. It promises to be a real show-stopper, but, in truth, the programme is packed with such goodies – along with workshops, family shows and more – and you can discover what lies in store at the website, below.Billingham International Folklore Festival of World Dance, Saturday 11-Sunday 19 August, Billingham. billinghamfestival.co.uk
