ellamesma18.jpg Very Ladylike, I must say

In the wake of #MeToo comes Ladylike, a funny and furious show from the Ella Mesma Company, which is coming to Dance City this July.

Fusing dynamic hip-hop with the tempestuous and sexually charged Rumba, Ladylike is a new piece of dance theatre which takes a fierce, frank and funny look at the potential and the limitations of gender roles in today’s society. Based on interviews with young women and hip-hop and Latin dancers, Ella Mesma Company have created a new ritual for women to explore pleasure, consent and gender roles – purging clichés and celebrating sisterhood. Get along to Dance City early as DJ Nandy will be playing Latin and hip-hop in the social space from 6pm, and there will be an exhibition of artwork by Hugo Canuto, and the chance to play Chicken Charades… And for those that get a taste for Latin moves, there is a Roots of Rumba party at Kommunity on Friday 13 July, with a free and fun dance class at 9pm by Ella Mesa.

Ladylike: Ella Mesma Company, Thursday 12 July, Dance City, Temple Street, Newcastle, 7.30pm, £9.50 (£8 students/U18s). dancecity.co.uk
