North (Market Square Music)

Gem Andrews was born in Liverpool but raised in Newcastle and her roots are buried deep within the north-east, connecting her to the strong folk tradition within the region. Her latest album is a real, alt-country, ahem, gem, featuring songs that do what country music does best: explore darker themes but in a supremely melodic way, often with a stirring defiance. Two of the tracks – Two Lighthouses and Straight Lines – set the words of Julia Darling’s poems to music (Darling being another adopted daughter of Newcastle with Andrews doing her words proud here) and she signs off with a super version of Kate and Anna McGarrigle’s Come A Long Way
