alkent18.jpg Paul Weller’s let himself go…

Hey! That’s not Wella Wella Wella! That’s Al Kent! Doyen of disco who is rocking up at Hoochie Coochie in June. We’ll have a large slice of that.

Al Kent has the kind of record collection that leaves me floored with envy. He’s spent a lifetime building up a cache of rare soul and disco records that is the envy of all his peers. At the height of the ‘Disco House’ boom in the 1990s he launched his own Million Dollar Disco label and made his own edits of classic tunes, with his sets being made entirely up of his own re-rubs. Such dedication has seen him much in demand around the world and he’s also had the honour of playing the Southport Weekender four times (more than any other ‘Connoisseur’s Corner’ guest). He also played the Ete D’Amour boat part on the Seine at the personal request of none other than Dimitri From Paris. In short: he’s the real deal and all roads this month should lead to Al.

Al Kent DJ Set, Friday 8 June, Hoochie Coochie, Newcastle, 9.30pm, free before 10pm (£5 after). hoochiecoochie.co.uk
