If you like pop and R&B that screams THE SOUND OF NOW, then Washington’s Megan Dhalai should be right up your street.

She’s right up mine. Megan is only 22-years-old but, despite currently being unsigned, she’s already played the Metro Radio Arena and the O2 Academy in Newcastle. Indeed, she is back at the Academy in June (at Academy 2) in what looks a great gig with support from Olivia Kate Smith (with a soulful voice to swoon for) and Liv Harland (a charismatic 20-year-old from North Yorkshire who has the kind of husky voice that can hold a room rapt). Megan herself has a really classy voice and pens her own stuff (and has already had a Songwriter of the Year nomination at the UBeat Awards) and has developed a slinky style that should appeal to fans of Dua Lipa and Camila Cabello. I’m massively into both Lipa and Cabello - and I don’t chuck around such comparisons lightly - so if you’re down with the greatest music genre of them all (ie pop) then I’d advise you to make a bee-line for Megan.

Megan Dhalai + Olivia Kate Smith + Liv Harland, Friday 29 June, O2 Academy Newcastle, 6.30pm, £6.75. facebook.com/megandhalaimusic
