testosterone18.jpg What kind of men are these?

The winner of the prestigious Best Theatre Show at The Pleasance in Edinburgh last year is coming to Arts Centre Washington in early May. Brace yourself for a shot of Testosterone.

Among the rave notices that Testosterone has already received, I was particularly interested to note that it garnered a hearty back-slapping from Lyn Gardner, the Guardian’s notoriously hard to please critic who never knowingly gives anything more that 2-stars (“Multi-layered and gripping physical theatre” she burbled). It’s a co-production between the Rhum and Clay Theatre Company and Kit Redstone and is set in the confines of a male changing room. Lighting the touch fuse is Kit, someone who has transitioned from female to male in his early thirties and someone who has experienced adult life on both sides of the gender fence, giving him the opportunity to notice what differences there are in how he is treated in society. His biggest challenge comes however when he enters the gym for the first time and is confronted by masculinity in all of its forms. Honest, irreverent and physical, this is an epic tour-de-force that asks: what kind of ‘man’ are you?
