maestro18.jpg They call him Maestro for a reason

Amsterdam’s DJ Maestro is so called because no one can conduct a dancefloor quite like him as he pulls in extraordinarily eclectic sets that have a distinct jazzy bent. He’s playing Hoochie Coochie in early May.

One of my favourite remix albums of recent years is a compilation of reworked Nina Simone tunes that was pulled together by Dutch master DJ Maestro, which features some of her familiar songs given a rubdown by the likes of Renegades of Jazz, Newcastle’s own Smoove, and DJ Maestro himself. It remains super fresh no matter how many times I give it an airing. And Maestro is all about freshness as he spins his magic over a plethora of styles in which he has John Coltrane rubbing shoulders with a Cerrone track, or Masters at Work cropping up alongside Chet Baker and Fela Kuti. He takes clubbers on a real rollercoaster and you can hop on board for free if you arrive at Hoochie Coochie on Friday 4 May before 10pm (it’s a fiver thereafter).
