Wonk Unit have been heralded by Louder Than War as “arguably the future of punk rock” and the cult London outfit are romping into Sunderland this April.

Wonk Unit are the movers and groovers behind Wonkfest, London’s biggest DIY Punk Festival, which will reach the grand old age of six this July when they stage a full day of megawatt mayhem and raucous partying. Before that all kicks off however the band are releasing their sixth studio album in April and are undertaking an extensive UK tour in which they will be supported by US band The Raging Nathans, who plough a similar furrow to the Wonks. And what a furrow! The band make a quite glorious racket, their ditties stuffed with good cheer and the kind of unexpected daffiness that speaks of a band who know the value of the phrase “a good time had by all”. If the Beastie Boys had of taken their cue from punk rock rather than hip-hop they might have sounded a bit like Wonk Unit. (But not nearly as good.)
