Stage Editorial

kathrynryan16.jpg It’s TV’s Katherine Ryan!

Katherine Ryan has lit up plenty of UK comedy shows over the last few years, but she’s at her very best when she’s got the whole stage to herself and can really cut loose; and she’ll be doing just that at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House when she comes to Newcastle in March.

Canadian Katherine Ryan has lived in the UK so long now that she says knickers rather than panties when talking about women’s unmentionables. I know this because I saw her give one-hit wonder Sinitta such an exquisite roast on ITV a couple of years ago: “To Sinitta an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction is anytime we can’t see her knickers.” (She also added: “Sinitta your talent is legendary. No, that’s not the word – mythological” and: “You share your birthplace, Seattle, with many other great musicians - Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix - and just like them your career was tragically cut short aged 27.”

She’s been a star turn on whichever TV show she has appeared on from Frankie Boyle’s New World Order to The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, and her In Trouble stand-up show is one of the very best you’ll find on Netflix (“I spent so long trying to look like one of the Kardashians I don’t give a fuck it’s the dad”). Her latest show, Glitter Room, is in Newcastle in March: miss it and miss out.
