samlingfeb18.jpg Isn’t that actor Alex Jennings?

Yes indeed, and the star of The Crown and The Lady in the Van is appearing with internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Anne Murray and Royal Opera House vocal coach and pianist Caroline Dowdle at Sage Gateshead this February in the latest Samling Masterclass and Concert that, officially, is set to be “some afternoon”.

I love Alex Jennings. He’s brilliant in everything I’ve seen him in, whether he’s playing Alan Bennett in The Lady in the Van, the Duke of Windsor in The Crown, or Prince Charles in The Queen; and it’s going to be amazing to see him up close and personal in the latest public event from Samling.

He will be joined by Anne Murray and Caroline Dowdle and these three experts in classical music and drama will lead eight of the most promising young international singers and pianists in a public masterclass, whereby audience members can see what it takes to make a great classical artist.

The class, and concert, will be the culmination of a week of intensive coaching and offers a glimpse into the artistic process of world-class musicians that usually takes place behind closed doors.

The eight specially selected young artists will perform and be critiqued and coached by Samling’s leadership team before a short concert in which audiences can witness first-hand the rapid and often striking refinement of the artist’s performance. Yep, it’s going to be some afternoon.

Samling Artist Programme: Masterclass and Concert, Saturday 24 February, Sage Two, Sage Gateshead, 1.30pm-4.30pm, concert 5.15pm-6.15pm, £16.50 (tickets are for both Masterclass and Concert), http://sagegateshead.com/event/samling-masterclass-and-showcase44348/
